What’s New, On & Happening in Fulham
May 2024
“May is the month of expectation, the month of wishes, the month of hope.” - Emily Brontë
Have you heard, SW6 has its very own podcast? Recorded right here in Fulham at VOXPOD studios the first episode is out now on YouTube, Apple and Spotify. On the intro episode listeners will find out what Fulham Chronicles is all about, how it came to be and what you can expect in the future. Moving forward hosts Zara & Melinda will talk to residents, business owners, brands and entrepreneurs to find out their story and connection to our urban village.
Zara Thomas told us “I’m so excited about Fulham Chronicles and that Melinda and I are giving Fulham a voice. There are so many incredible stories and things happening in SW6, we’re so excited to bring them to our community with the wonderful support of James, Camilla and their team at VOXPOD. We hope lots of locals tune in and let us know what they think or get in touch on hello@fulhamsocialhub.co.uk if they have a story that needs to be told and heard. I’ve pulled Melinda out of her comfort zone to reinforce what she’s been doing with Urban Village LDN these last five years and we had lots of fun getting the first episode out”.
Take a listen on the link below and if you like what you hear, subscribe to whichever channel you tune into to hear more. The next guest on Fulham Chronicles is a Fulham local, an entrepreneur, who created and named his brand after someone very dear to his heart. A heart warming and wrenching story in equal measure.
That’s not something you hear very often is it! The team at WagWorks have opened their doors to non members by providing training programmes for all four legged Fulhamites and their owners. Ellie who recently joined as Head of Training has, alongside a dog behaviourist, created a range of programmes and activity workshops including agility, scent work, pet gundog skills, recall and loose lead training. Urban Village LDN talked to Ellie to found out more.
“We aim to make WagWorks a home from home and the whole experience as enriching as possible. Our training takes a holistic approach whether it’s bringing confidence to more introverted dogs, especially rescues who may be slightly nervous or suspicious of new environments, or giving specific breeds like super intelligent labs, Vizslas and active spaniels a focused outlet in an urban environment”.
WagWorks also run puppy courses which cover everything theory based on line, from diet and nutrition to sleep quality and mental stimulation, before moving onto practical training held onsite at their HQ on Fulham High Street. Ellie told us “with a puppy there’s a lot more to training than the sit / stay basics, we’re getting them set up for urban life, making sure they fit into a human world and can navigate it in as stress free way as possible. Learning how to cross a road safely, settling, separation, using commands leave it or drop so they can be safe and happy”. Dogs also start their socialisation and desensitisation work at WagWorks in environments that mimic a trip to the vet or the groomers, to counteract that negative association dogs can have after having jabs at such a young age, making a trip to the vets or groomers “less scary and daunting”.
Other workshops include loose lead recall crash courses, reinforcing previous training when adolescence kicks in and dogs regress, Parkour “for urban agility, an obedience led approach to training which is a bit of fun, a hobby to bond with your dog at the weekend, something a bit different to your regular walk”. Wagworks also offer members and non members 1:1 training support whether you’re dealing with behavioural changes, seeking help or want to address a particular concern. Get in touch with Ellie training@wagworks.co.uk if you want to find out more! “My role at WagWorks is so rewarding, I’m looking forward to engaging with and meeting non members. I’d love to see new faces coming along to one of our workshops, they’re really all about strengthening the bond between dogs and their owners and learning new skills together whilst having some fun! The ultimate aim is that they go home as better dogs”.
Sacred Tones is a new holistic sanctuary readying to open its doors in Parsons Green this month; on the former site of the Mary’s Living & Giving shop on the New Kings Road. Urban Village LDN caught up with local resident and Founder Carla von Anhalt to ask why Fulham and to hear more. “I’m incredibly excited and proud to offer such a diverse range of healing classes to West London,” says Carla. “As a mother of two, I’ve always wanted a place where families can come together to relax, connect and explore new healing modalities. Since moving to Parsons Green during lockdown in 2020, I have been truly surprised by the warmth of the community. My vision for Sacred Tones was to create a space where all members of the family, even the furry ones, can come and connect back to ourselves and nature's rhythms. As we prepare to open our doors, we invite everyone in the community to join us on this exciting journey towards holistic wellbeing.”
Sacred Tones is described not just as a wellness studio but a community haven offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Spanning two floors, designed in collaboration with Fulham architects Beyt, the experience begins as soon as you enter. There is a modern wellness shop, with a curated selection of eco products, from essential oils and tinctures to holistic kids and pet products, awaits. Adjacent to the wellness shop is a herbal bar, offering a variety of warming drinks such as herbal infusions, moon milk, adaptogenic matcha and cacao, kids cacao and herbal mocktails available on Fridays and Saturdays. The journey continues to The Den, a cosy seating area encompassing Moroccan floor sofas and mood lighting designed for relaxation, followed by a tranquil garden where herbs are grown for use in the herbal bar which we’ve been told is the only one of its kind in London.
The centrepiece of Sacred Tones is its main studio, a dedicated space for classes, workshops and ceremonies featuring a striking Patagonia Quartzite backlit wall known for its powerful healing properties. Sacred Tones specialises in sound healing, featuring renowned practitioners who offer unique experiences with crystal bowls, gongs, sound journeys, vocal sound healing and Tibetan bowls. Beyond sound healing, Sacred Tones has classes and workshops catering to various interests and skill levels from breathwork and yin yoga to children's crystal healing and Saturday art and craft sessions. Take a look at their launch offer x 3 classes for £45, usually £33 per class. There’s a dog-friendly policy upstairs, two dogs per session, and they can enjoy the garden and crystal-infused water while they wait. After having three boys, local resident Jade Fitzsimmons was delighted to have a little girl Rosie who inspired her to set up Rosie Lou’s Boutique selling children’s clothing. “Having a little girl I became obsessed with clothes that I could buy her. I’m building the business slowly and am keen to meet and connect with Fulham locals. I don’t mind posting orders to people but you can’t beat a more personal service, hand delivering items to customers who’ve purchased from you. I love my community, enjoy meeting new people and making connections. I’m looking forward to doing that more, it was great taking part in the recent Fulham Social Hub launch and next up will be the summer market at St John’s school on 29 June. Urban Village LDN was recently introduced to Megan Carton who is celebrating her first year as owner of the Make Believe Fulham franchise whilst the company celebrates it’s 20th anniversary.
Make Believe is a performing arts company where young people learn to sing, act and dance, whatever their level or ability. Megan, who is also a working actor, told us “I’m passionate about providing performing arts tuition at a reasonable price, making it affordable and accessible for all. I’m also on a mission to bring free singing, acting and dancing tuition to as many Fulham children and schools as possible”. This is all in Megan’s DNA as she grew up in Ireland where her Mother ran a performing arts school so it’s gone full circle with Megan becoming Principle of Make Believe Fulham.
Make Believe Fulham hold weekly classes for groups of children ages: 3-5, 6-9, 10-18 which means pupils can join and go all the way through the school as they grow up to become young adults; whilst making friends, having fun and learning skills for life. Teachers are industry professionals and two ex students are now teachers at the school, with children going on to perform in shows including Mrs Doubtfire and MJ which has just come to London. There is also an academy and agency connected to the school meaning pupils can earn UCAS points and take on professional work respectively. There are free trials available and if you’re interested in looking into classes for your child, discussing bringing performing arts workshops to your school, get in touch with Megan she would love to hear from you. Find out more on the link below or give them a follow on Instagram.
